A Review of Sunday Lunch at The Staith House

Sunday lunch at an award-winning gastropub at the North Shields Fish Quay – bound to be amazing, right? I visited The Staith House a couple of weeks ago for my favourite meal of the week (Sunday dinner of course) and on the whole, I thought the food was fantastic.

The Staith House prides itself on using the finest local produce to come up with dishes that are both tasty and different. Having dined there myself, I can honestly say they’ve succeeded in creating food that is both incredibly tasty and certainly very different (read on for more information about courgette-gate…)

Despite the lovely cosy, nautical feel of the restaurant down by the Fish Quay, I have to be honest and say that my experience at The Staith House didn’t get off to the best start. Arriving on time for our table booking, we were met with a scene of chaos – a sunny Sunday always leads to this in the restaurant world and I am completely sympathetic of it. We were invited to wait at the bar (again, very busy and not ideal for my 87-year old Grandma). After around 40 minutes of waiting for our table to become available, we were led to our table by a very apologetic host who made up for the inconvenience by taking our drinks off the bill.

Thankfully, the rest of this review is pretty positive because I did think the food was something quite special. Our food arrived extremely quickly (which was good because I was getting ‘hangry’ by this point) and to our delight, was delicious. To start, I had ordered the Steamed Shetland Mussels, which came in a moreish cream and white wine sauce and possibly the tastiest hunk of bread I’ve ever tasted. The host informed me that all the bread was homemade at The Staith House and unfortunately we couldn’t be let in on the secret recipe! Such a shame as I could eat that bread for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day.

Next came to the course we’d all been waiting for – the main event. I opted for the sirloin of beef, making sure to ask for it to be served nice and pink. The meat was really very good and the Yorkshire pudding was up there with some of the best I’ve tasted. The roast potatoes and cauliflower cheese were both top notch – we felt terribly sorry for the table next to us who were informed by the host that the kitchen had run out of cauli cheese, but then were immediately jealous when we saw the waiting staff bring out a big dish of extra roasties for them!

Alongside the other usual vegetables you get with a Sunday roast, including carrots and cabbage, an unfamiliar yellow vegetable that looked like a slice of cucumber was met with confusion by all. After tentatively tasting it, we were still baffled and were told by the host that it was, in fact, courgette! On a Sunday roast! I’m not sure how common it is to serve courgette on a traditional Sunday roast – have you seen that done elsewhere? There’s no doubt that it tasted nice, but for me I was a bit unsure it went with the meaty gravy of a Sunday roast.

My sister, not as big a fan of Sunday roasts as me, went for the North Sea fishcakes with aioli as a main course. She said they tasted delicious and if I had gone on any other day of the week, they certainly would’ve been my first choice!

The desserts sounded spectacular but as usual, we had filled our boots too early, plus they were slightly on the pricier side. Despite the unfortunate start to our meal and the surprise of courgette-gate, we left The Staith House feeling satisfied, vowing to return on another, more overcast day!
