Top Christmas Date Destinations in the North East

At this time of year we tend to focus on all of the material things associated with Christmas. What makes Christmas truly special is when we appreciate the time we get to spend with our loved ones, making happy memories. Because I’m working on Christmas Day this year, I for one will be making the most out of the time I see the most important people in my life over the next few days! Why not treat your other half to a day trip or date night? Here are some great date destinations in the North East of England that will show your significant other how much you appreciate time spent with them:

1) Tyneside Cinema Trip

Tyneside Cinema

The Tyneside Cinema is one of Newcastle’s most precious hidden gems, and each year it offers the ultimate Christmas treat: the chance to watch a Christmas classic in the comfort of this traditional news theatre. ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ is one of those Christmas movies that stays with you, as it reminds us of the value of our family and loved ones. If the thought of you both watching this classic in the beautiful auditoria of the Tyneside, with a glass of wine in your hand isn’t enough, the Tyneside are offering tickets that include either a mince pie and mulled wine, or a festive afternoon tea before the showing!

2) SIX at The Baltic Dinner Date

Newcastle Quayside

I speak from personal experience when I say that there aren’t many more romantic spots than the top of The Baltic at Christmas time, overlooking Newcastle Quayside’s panoramic beauty. The restaurant walls are made almost entirely of glass, allowing you to share the fantastic view of Christmas at the Quayside with your partner. The menu at SIX very rarely disappoints, and I believe that this is the perfect opportunity to enjoy the food of Christmas, without the stress of making it yourself on the 25th!

3) Doxford Hall Spa Day

Doxford Hall Spa

Spa trip dates are an undeniably romantic affair, and a rare chance to completely relax and spend quality time together. Doxford Hall is the perfect retreat: situated in the stunning Northumberland countryside, its classic architecture and elegance is juxtaposed with a beautiful, modern Aqueous Spa which offers a whole range of treatments and the use of the Hall’s leisure facilities. Having stayed at Doxford Hall twice myself, I know that the leisure facilities are usually very quiet, and make for a tranquil date setting. In the past I have been very impressed with the quality of treatments, including the Hot Stone Massage and Manicure I received. And you can’t say no to finishing off your date at Doxford with an Alnwick Gin and Tonic in the gorgeous bar upstairs! So don your fluffy robe and slippers, and get relaxing!

4) Durham Day Trip

Durham Cathedral

I lived in Durham for three years, and I know first-hand how beautiful this little but culturally-rich city is around this time of year. The cobbled streets are adorned with glittering Christmas lights, and Market Square is festooned with festive decorations and a huge Christmas tree. Just a short 12 minute train ride from Newcastle Central Station, Durham has a huge amount to offer for you and your partner to enjoy. Get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and visit the breath-taking Cathedral in all it’s Yuletide glory. Pop into one of the many bars and traditional pubs in the city centre for a cup of warming mulled wine. Finish your day off with a first-class meal at the most romantic dining spot in Durham: The Cellar Door. Their festive menu is as eclectic as it is fantastic – a great way to finish off a couple’s trip to a great city.

5) Lumley Castle Christmas Elizabethan Banquet

Lumley Castle

Lumley Castle in County Durham is a place that my family hold very dear – my parents were married there, and we often visit there as a family to celebrate special occasions. One of the best events I have ever attended at Lumley Castle was an Elizabethan Banquet, and I was delighted to hear that they also hold Chritmas-themed banquets too! A four-course feast complete with goblets of mead and red wine, await those who enter the Barons’ Hall. Expect to be treated like lords and ladies of times gone by, with costumed court entertainers, singing, feasting and a great deal of merriment. For those  who like to boogie on down, the feast is followed by a dungeon disco – something you’ll not have the chance to attend at many other places! Fun-loving couples up for a good laugh together, and a night of entertainment and feasting you’ll never forget – this banquet is the perfect Christmas celebration for you.
