What comes to mind when you think of Autumn? For me it’s not just about falling leaves and colder temperatures, but it’s also about visiting somewhere cosy and welcoming for a catch up with friends! If there’s good tea, coffee and delicious cakes on offer, that’s definitely an added bonus too! Yesterday I decided to visit Cake Stories on Brentwood Avenue, Jesmond, as I’d heard good things from friends who had visited and gave glowing reviews not just of the cakes, but of the twinkly lights and friendly atmosphere too.
(Thanks to Ella D for this lovely photo!)
As soon as I stepped into this neighbourhood coffee house and cakery, I got a lovely, warm feeling about it. Stands of homemade scones and an array of different cakes were on display at the counter – there’s no way you could enter this cakery and not be tempted by the inviting treats on offer! I immediately understand why my friends raved about the ambience at Cake Stories – the lighting really is very ‘hygge’ and the whole place had a relaxed vibe that really made me feel at home.
There wasn’t one cake on display that I would not have loved to try! Tempted by Red Velvet, Chocolate Orange and a whole host of different sweet treats, I eventually settled for a Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake with a pot of English Breakfast Tea. The cake was anything but heavy and the peanut butter icing was absolutely divine! The generous cake portions meant I wouldn’t have had room for anything else off the menu, but the selection of lunch dishes on offer sounded fab too. Next time I visit I’ll definitely be skipping breakfast so I can indulge in the Camembert dish, followed by even more cake!
Located on the same street as the popular Arlo Bistro and Café, famous for its huge rocky roads and lovely brunches, Cake Stories has a welcoming ambience, cosy lighting and a staggering cake selection. As the days and nights (Cake Stories is open ’til 9:30pm) get cooler, I can think of nothing better than wrapping up and heading to West Jesmond to sit in a warm, rustic café with friends, to enjoy the delights that Cake Stories has to offer.
Pro(s): If the cake I had was anything to go by, Cake Stories serves really tasty cakes! Great ambience, with a very relaxed feel.
Con(s): As with most cafés and eateries in Jesmond, Cake Stories isn’t necessarily the cheapest. My pot of tea and cake came to around £6. However, I left feeling full, extremely satisfied and in a very good mood!
